The Spinone Italiano is one of Europe's oldest pointing breeds, developed in the Piedmont region to work slowly and methodically through the heavy cover and marsh where a fast pointer is useless. That deliberate working style shaped the temperament: the Spinone is notably calm, patient and gentle for a large sporting dog, and it is one of the easier gundogs to live with indoors. Calm is not the same as lazy. It needs a solid hour or two of daily exercise and enjoys long walks, swimming and scent work, and it likes doing them with its people; Spinoni are strongly attached and do not cope well with being left alone for long days. They are sensitive and can be quietly stubborn, so training should be patient, positive and consistent rather than repetitive drilling, which bores them. The wiry coat sheds moderately and needs brushing weekly plus hand-stripping a few times a year to keep its texture; the beard holds water and food and needs regular wiping, and the drop ears need checking. Buy from a breeder who screens hips and elbows and who is open about cerebellar ataxia, an inherited neurological disease with a DNA test available in this breed. As with any deep-chested dog, feed measured meals and avoid hard exercise right after eating to reduce bloat risk.
