The Vizsla is the original 'velcro dog' — a rust-gold Hungarian hunting athlete that combines serious sporting drive with an intense need to be physically close to its people at all times. It runs, hunts and plays tirelessly by day and burrows under the blankets at night, and it does not do 'aloof'. This combination makes it demanding on two fronts: it needs a great deal of vigorous daily exercise and mental work, and it needs constant companionship, so it is a poor match for a home where it would be left alone for long hours, where it develops severe separation anxiety. The short coat is wonderfully easy, needing only a weekly wipe or brush. Given the exercise and company it craves, the Vizsla is a sensitive, affectionate and highly trainable partner that responds only to gentle, positive methods. Health-wise it is a relatively robust breed, but buy from a breeder who screens hips, and be aware of hip dysplasia, epilepsy, hypothyroidism and allergies. Give a Vizsla an active, involved home with plenty of exercise and closeness, and it will be a devoted, high-energy companion for twelve to fourteen years.
