Despite the name, the Abyssinian guinea pig has nothing to do with Ethiopia — like all cavies it descends from the Andes of South America, domesticated over 3,000 years ago; the 'Abyssinian' label was Victorian exotic branding for its rosetted coat. Judges count 8–10 crisp rosettes; adults weigh 0.8–1.2 kg and live 5–7 years. Cavy rules apply doubled: they are herd animals that must live with at least one same-species friend, in a cage of 0.7–1 square meter minimum per pair with hay everywhere. Abyssinians have a reputation as the most mischievous and vocal of the breeds — expect theatrical wheeking at the fridge and popcorning mid-zoomies. The rosetted coat collects hay and needs brushing two or three times a week. Like all guinea pigs they cannot synthesize vitamin C: feed daily C-rich vegetables (bell pepper is the staple) alongside unlimited grass hay and measured pellets. Watch teeth, respiratory sounds and urinary grit — and enjoy the loudest small pet conversation in the house.
