๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The American guinea pig is the most common cavy breed, descended from domesticated South American cavies bred by Andean peoples thousands of years ago. Sturdy and low-maintenance thanks to its short coat, it weighs 0.7-1.2 kg and lives five to seven years, longer than most pet rodents. Its gentle, vocal nature makes it a beloved family pet and an ideal first cavy. Guinea pigs are herd animals and must be kept in same-sex pairs or groups; solitary housing causes stress. Provide a large ground-level cage of at least 0.7 square metres per pair, lined with soft bedding, with hides and hay racks. Their diet must center on unlimited grass hay for dental and gut health, plus a measured cavy pellet and daily fresh vegetables rich in vitamin C, which they cannot synthesize. Keep them at cool room temperature away from drafts, handle gently supporting the hindquarters, and trim nails regularly.
