Bennett's wallaby, or the red-necked wallaby (Notamacropus rufogriseus), is a medium marsupial from southeastern Australia and Tasmania, weighing 12-20 kilograms and living twelve to fifteen years in captivity. They are gentle, calm grazers by nature but remain semi-wild and easily startled, prone to panicked bolting that can cause injury, so calm handling and secure space are vital. Hand-raised joeys bond more readily. They require a large, grassy paddock with soft, tall perimeter fencing (rigid fences cause fatal collisions), shelter from heat and cold, and dry ground. Feed a grass-and-hay-based diet with fresh grazing, macropod pellets, and limited vegetables, ensuring adequate vitamin E and selenium to prevent nutritional myopathy; lumpy jaw is a serious dental concern. Wallabies are legal in some US states without permits but restricted in others and require licences in the UK and elsewhere, so verify local rules and prepare ample land.
