The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, striking tri-colour Swiss farm dog with a famously gentle, calm and devoted temperament, wonderful with children and content to be a loving part of family life. It is moderately active, enjoying walks, hikes and cool-weather play, but as a big, heavy dog it should not be over-exercised as a puppy while its joints develop. Bred to work alongside people, it bonds deeply and hates being left alone, thriving as a full family member rather than an outdoor dog. The thick tricolour coat sheds a lot and needs brushing several times a week, more during seasonal moults, and the breed does far better in cool climates than in heat. The heartbreaking reality of Berners is a very short lifespan — often only seven to ten years — driven largely by an exceptionally high cancer rate, so buy from a breeder who breeds for longevity and health-tests their lines. Also screen for hip and elbow dysplasia, and guard against bloat with measured meals and rest after eating. Keep it lean and cool, avoid over-exercising the growing puppy, keep up preventive care, and a Bernese Mountain Dog will repay you with immense love in its precious years.
