The Boerboel is a dominant, self-assured guardian that forms a powerful bond with its family and takes protection seriously. At home it is affectionate, playful and remarkably gentle with children it has grown up with, but its size, strength and territorial nature make an experienced owner essential. Early socialization teaches the Boerboel to distinguish genuine threats from ordinary visitors. Daily exercise and mental work keep this intelligent breed balanced — brisk walks, play and training give an outlet for its considerable drive. Boerboels are eager to please and learn quickly, so consistent, reward-based training from puppyhood establishes the calm leadership they respect. A bored or under-led Boerboel will make its own decisions, which is rarely what you want in a 70-kilo dog. The short, dense coat needs only weekly brushing and occasional baths. As a large, fast-growing breed, the Boerboel is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, eyelid problems and bloat, so slow puppy growth, joint-friendly exercise and measured feeding matter. With firm, loving guidance, it is a devoted and stable family protector.
