Blue-tongued skinks are a group of Tiliqua species from Australia and Indonesia, growing to 45-60 cm and living 15-20 years or more. They are heavy-bodied, terrestrial omnivores that lumber along on stubby legs and startle predators by gaping to reveal a vivid blue tongue. Their calm, inquisitive nature and manageable size make them a top choice for keepers who want an interactive lizard. House a single skink in a long floor-space enclosure of at least 120x60 cm with a thick substrate for burrowing and hides at each end. Provide a basking spot of 32-35 C, a cooler side, and a good UVB source. Humidity varies by species, from around 40% for Australian types to 60-80% for Indonesian ones. Feed a varied omnivorous diet, roughly half greens and vegetables and half protein such as insects, lean meats, and quality wet dog food, watching portions to prevent obesity. They generally enjoy gentle, regular handling.
