The sandfish skink is a burrowing lizard of the Sahara and Arabian deserts, growing to about 15-20 cm and living roughly 8-12 years. Its smooth, polished scales, countersunk jaw, and streamlined body let it dive into fine sand and undulate through it like a fish, an adaptation for escaping heat and predators. Most of its life is spent below the surface, surfacing to feed. Because of its unique habit it needs a deep bed of fine, dry sand at least 10-15 cm thick in a long enclosure of around 90x45 cm. Provide a hot basking surface of 38-42 C at one end, a cooler side, and a UVB source. Keep humidity very low to match its arid home, though a slightly damp lower sand layer aids hydration. Feed gut-loaded insects such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms dusted with calcium; the skink will often ambush prey from just beneath the sand. It is a display animal rather than one for handling.
