The Call Duck is the smallest domestic duck breed, developed in Europe and weighing just 0.5-0.7 kilograms with a lifespan of 8-12 years. Originally bred as living decoys for their exceptionally loud, carrying quack, these compact ducks are now kept as charming, sociable pets, though prospective owners must be aware that the females in particular are genuinely noisy and unsuited to close neighbors. Call ducks need secure, predator-proof housing and, critically, access to clean water deep enough to submerge their heads and ideally to swim and bathe, which is essential for their eye, nostril, and feather health. Feed a waterfowl or poultry feed with appropriate niacin levels, plus greens and grit, avoiding standard chicken feed low in niacin. They are highly social flock birds that must be kept in groups, thrive with foraging space and a pond or pool, and reward keepers with playful, engaging, and endearingly talkative personalities.
