๐ Care guide
Cerith Snails (Cerithium species) are found in warm shallow seas worldwide and reach about 2 to 3 cm with a long, pointed, ridged spiral shell. They are unusually versatile members of a clean-up crew, grazing film algae and diatoms from glass and rock while also burrowing through the top layer of the sand bed, eating detritus and leftover food and helping prevent the substrate from compacting. Add them to an established tank of 40 litres or more at 24-27C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4, with stable calcium and alkalinity and no copper. Drip acclimate before release. A practical advantage over Astraea snails is that ceriths can usually right themselves if they fall, so losses are lower. They may reproduce in a mature system, laying strings of white eggs on the glass, which is harmless. Stock about one per 8 to 15 litres, and offer dried algae if the tank becomes too clean to sustain them.
