๐ Care guide
The Chocolate Chip Sea Star (Protoreaster nodosus) comes from the Indo-Pacific and reaches about 15 cm, named for the conical dark spines dotting its tan upper surface. It is one of the hardiest starfish in the trade, but it is a scavenger and opportunistic predator rather than a true reef-safe animal. Keep in a fish-only or FOWLR aquarium of 190 litres (50 gallons) or more at 24-26C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4, and acclimate very slowly, as all sea stars are extremely sensitive to salinity swings. It will eat corals, clams, sponges, and sessile inverts, so it is not suitable for reef displays. Feed directly with chopped seafood, mussel, and shrimp placed near it. Handle gently and never expose it to air.
