The Siberian chipmunk (Eutamias sibiricus) ranges across the forests of northern Asia and is the species most often seen in the pet trade. Adults weigh 50-150 grams and live roughly five to eight years. They are active, semi-tame at best, and prize their independence, so they suit observers who enjoy watching natural behavior more than cuddling. House them in a tall aviary-style cage or converted flight with branches, ropes, nest boxes, and a solid wheel, since they need vertical space and constant activity. Feed a mix of grains, seeds, nuts in moderation, fresh fruit and vegetables, and occasional insects or egg for protein; hoarding is instinctive, so remove perishable caches. They may enter partial winter torpor if kept cool. Now classed as an invasive species, they are banned or permit-controlled in the EU and parts of the US, so confirm regulations before acquiring one.
