Pygmy possums (Cercartetus species) hail from the forests and heathlands of Australia and are highly specialized nectar and insect feeders. Weighing a mere 15-45 grams, they may enter torpor when cold and live around four to seven years in careful captivity. Ownership is extremely restricted, generally limited to licensed keepers within Australia, and they are almost never available legally elsewhere. House them in a warm, densely planted arboreal enclosure with narrow branches, nest boxes, and eucalyptus foliage that mimics the wild canopy. Their diet centers on nectar substitutes, pollen, flowering blossoms, and small insects; poor nutrition quickly causes deficiency and metabolic disease. Maintain stable warmth and high humidity, and avoid drafts that trigger respiratory illness. These are fragile, largely hands-off animals suited to experienced conservation-minded keepers rather than casual pet owners, and always require the appropriate wildlife permits.
