๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The domestic ferret was tamed from the European polecat over two thousand years ago, originally for hunting rabbits. A true obligate carnivore, it has a long tubular body, weighs 0.7-2.0 kg with males larger than females, and lives six to ten years. Ferrets are intensely playful, intelligent, and social, sleeping up to eighteen hours a day but wildly energetic when awake. Ferrets need several hours of supervised out-of-cage play daily in a thoroughly ferret-proofed space, as they squeeze into tiny gaps and swallow hazardous objects. House them in a large multi-level cage with hammocks and tunnels, ideally with another ferret for companionship. Their diet must be high in animal protein and fat: a quality ferret or high-meat kibble, or a raw/whole-prey diet, never grain-heavy or plant-based food. They are prone to adrenal disease and insulinoma, so schedule regular exotic-vet checks, keep vaccinations current, and provide litter training and plenty of enrichment.
