📖 Care guide
The Dalmatian is a striking, spotted coaching dog bred to trot beside horse-drawn carriages for miles, and that heritage defines its needs: it has enormous stamina and requires serious daily exercise — running, hiking, dog sports — to stay balanced, and an under-exercised Dalmatian becomes hyperactive and destructive. It is playful, alert and devoted, good with active families, but its energy and sensitivity mean it needs consistent, positive training and early socialisation. This is a dog for genuinely active people, not a placid housemate. The short coat sheds constantly (those white and black hairs get everywhere) and needs a weekly brush. Health-wise the breed has two well-known, breed-defining concerns. First, congenital deafness is common, so buy from a breeder who BAER-tests puppies — a deaf Dalmatian can live well but needs adapted handling. Second, a unique uric-acid metabolism makes the breed prone to urate bladder stones, so they need constant access to water, plenty of exercise, and often a specific lower-purine diet. Also watch for skin allergies and hip dysplasia. Give a Dalmatian serious exercise, training, water and a suitable diet, and it will be an energetic, loyal companion for eleven to thirteen years.
