The Red Sea Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii) inhabits the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean and grows to about 40 cm, making it one of the largest Zebrasoma species. Its body carries alternating pale and dark bars overlaid with fine spots, and the enormous dorsal and anal fins are raised in display or threat. Like all surgeonfish it carries a scalpel-sharp spine at the base of the tail, so handle it with a container rather than a net. This fish needs a very large tank, realistically 600 litres or more with strong flow and open swimming lanes, at 24-27C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4. Diet is the make-or-break factor: it is a grazing herbivore that needs dried marine algae or nori offered daily on a clip, plus spirulina-based pellets, and a meat-only diet leads directly to head and lateral line erosion. Tangs are also the species most prone to marine ich, so a quarantine period before introduction is genuinely worth the trouble. Keep only one sailfin tang per tank.
