Descended from the wild canary of the Atlantic islands, the Domestic Canary is a tiny songbird weighing 15-25 grams with a lifespan of 10-15 years. Bred for centuries for song, color, and form, canaries are prized for the male's beautiful singing and their easy, independent nature, thriving happily when housed alone unlike the flock-dependent finches. Provide a wide flight cage of at least 60cm width with horizontal room to fly, since exercise keeps them fit. Feed a quality canary seed mix supplemented with greens, egg food during molt and breeding, and a cuttlebone for calcium. Canaries are hands-off birds that dislike handling but reward owners with song and activity; males sing best when kept individually. Offer daily bathing water, keep the cage clean to prevent air-sac mites and scaly-leg parasites, and avoid drafts. With good care these hardy little songsters live remarkably long lives.
