The Java sparrow is a calm, hardy and elegant finch in tuxedo-grey plumage with a porcelain-pink bill, and it thrives on the company of its own kind. Like all finches it is a flock bird that should be kept in pairs or small groups, never alone, and it is a watch-don't-touch pet best enjoyed for its serene manners and soft clicking song rather than handling. Because they fly rather than climb, Javas need a long horizontal flight cage or aviary with space to move. One practical note: they are agricultural pests in some regions and are therefore illegal to keep in a few places, such as California, so check local law. Diet is a good finch or small-parrot seed mix with fresh greens, egg food and a cuttlebone for calcium. Java sparrows are generally robust, but the usual finch concerns apply: hens can suffer egg binding, especially when breeding heavily, so provide calcium and limit nesting if you are not breeding; watch also for respiratory air-sac mites and overgrown beak and nails. Keep the air clear of non-stick fumes, aerosols and smoke, provide company and flight space, and a small colony of Java sparrows will thrive peacefully for five to ten years.
