📖 Care guide

The golden wonder killifish is a captive-bred golden strain of Aplocheilus lineatus, a surface-dwelling fish native to the streams, ponds and rice paddies of southern India and Sri Lanka. It grows to about 10 cm and lives 3–4 years. Its metallic gold body and upturned mouth mark it as a specialised top-water predator. Golden wonders need a tank of 75 litres or more at 22–26°C with a pH of 6.0–7.5 and — critically — a tight-fitting lid, because they are powerful jumpers. They spend most of their time near the surface, so floating plants and open top-water suit them, along with subdued lighting to show off their sheen. A single fish or a group with more females than males works well. They are carnivores that hunt insects, larvae and small fish, eagerly taking floating pellets, and frozen or live foods like bloodworm and brine shrimp. Predatory by nature, they will eat any fish small enough to fit in their mouth, so choose tankmates of similar size or larger. Hardy and undemanding, their main risks are ich and fin rot from poor water, easily prevented with clean, stable conditions.
