Hillstream loaches are specialized fish adapted to fast-flowing mountain streams, with a flattened body and modified fins that let them grip surfaces in strong current. They require cool, highly oxygenated water between 68-75F and powerful flow from a powerhead or wavemaker, conditions quite different from a typical tropical community tank, so plan the setup around their needs. Their primary diet is aufwuchs, the film of algae and microorganisms that coats rocks, so a mature tank with plenty of algae-covered stones and biofilm is ideal, supplemented with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional frozen foods. They are peaceful and can be kept singly or in groups, though they may mildly compete over grazing territory. Low temperatures, brisk flow, and abundant surface area for grazing are the keys to keeping them healthy.
