The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest dog breed in the world — a gentle, calm, dignified giant once used to hunt wolves, now a serene, couch-filling philosopher famous for its sweet, patient temperament. Despite the immense size it is quiet and only moderately active as an adult, needing regular but not extreme exercise; puppies, however, must not be over-exercised while their enormous frames grow, and it needs space simply to exist and soft bedding for its joints. It bonds deeply and is a devoted, indoor family companion, not a guard dog or a kennel dog. The harsh, wiry coat needs weekly brushing and occasional hand-stripping. The heartbreaking reality of the breed is a very short lifespan — often only six to eight years — driven by serious health risks: dilated cardiomyopathy and other heart disease, bone cancer (osteosarcoma), and bloat and gastric torsion, a life-threatening emergency. Buy from a breeder who cardiac-screens and breeds for health, feed measured meals from a raised bowl and rest after eating, and avoid over-exercising the growing puppy. Give an Irish Wolfhound space, soft beds, gentle care and vigilant health monitoring, and it will return immense, quiet love in its precious, short life.
