The Ibizan Hound is a deer-graceful island sighthound from the Balearics, with warm amber eyes and huge, expressive 'satellite-dish' ears. Playful, independent and quietly affectionate, the 'Beezer' is a sensitive, clever dog that bonds with its family but has a mind of its own, so it needs gentle, patient, positive training and calm handling rather than force. Its defining practical trait is athleticism: it is an astonishing jumper that can clear two-metre fences from a standstill, so containment must be seriously high and secure. It has a strong prey drive, needs daily exercise and safe running space, and can't be trusted off-lead near small animals. Coat care is minimal — the smooth or wire coat needs only a weekly brush — but with little body fat it feels the cold and appreciates a coat in winter. Health-wise the Ibizan Hound is one of the healthier, hardier breeds, but be aware it can have allergies, cataracts and other eye disease, congenital deafness (which can be BAER-tested) and, rarely, epilepsy, and its lean build makes it sensitive to anaesthesia (tell your vet). Give an Ibizan Hound very secure high fencing, exercise, safe running and gentle training, and this elegant, athletic hound will be a devoted companion for eleven to fourteen years.
