The LaPerm began as a farm cat in Oregon, where a natural curly-coat mutation produced a cat wearing what looks like a permanent perm. Beyond the ringlets it is prized for temperament: affectionate, gentle and people-loving, a LaPerm will reach up to hook its paws around your neck for a hug, follow you from room to room and purr at impressive volume, all while keeping an active, curious streak that enjoys play and climbing. The curly coat, which comes in short and long versions, sheds little and needs a light touch — scrunch or comb it gently and avoid heavy brushing, which pulls the curl straight; a damp-hand smooth helps refresh the ringlets. This makes grooming refreshingly simple for a distinctive-looking cat. The LaPerm is generally a robust, healthy breed with no dramatic breed-specific disease, so the usual feline care applies: a good diet, weight management, dental hygiene, plenty of fresh water and annual check-ups. Give it the affection and interaction it craves and it will be a warm, devoted companion.
