๐ Care guide
The Madagascar Hissing Cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa) is a large, wingless roach from the forest floors of Madagascar, glossy brown and reaching 5-7 cm. Its signature is the loud hiss it makes by forcing air through breathing pores (spiracles), used in defence and social displays. Unlike pest cockroaches it does not fly, cannot climb smooth surfaces well, and is odourless and clean, living 2-5 years. Hissers are among the easiest invertebrate pets: docile, slow, hardy and content to be gently handled, they are often used to introduce children to insects. They are social and can be kept in groups, and in good conditions they readily breed, giving live birth to tiny nymphs. House a colony in a secure, well-ventilated terrarium with a smooth rim or petroleum-jelly barrier to prevent escapes, several centimetres of substrate, hides such as egg-crate or bark, and warmth around 24-28 C with moderate humidity. Feed a varied diet of fresh vegetables and fruit plus a protein source such as fish flakes or dog kibble, and provide a shallow water source or moist gel. They are remarkably trouble-free; the main care points are secure housing, adequate warmth and humidity, and clean food and substrate.
