📖 Care guide

A pot-bellied pig is a highly intelligent, long-lived livestock animal, not a small pet, and the single biggest source of heartbreak is the word 'mini': there is no truly tiny breed, and a healthy adult commonly reaches 40–70 kg. They are clever, curious and food-obsessed, learning to open doors and fridges and to test every boundary, so they need consistent training, a predictable routine, and firm rules to prevent pushy behaviour. Check local zoning first — pigs are often legally livestock and banned in residential areas. Pigs are herd animals that root, forage and explore, and they do best with outdoor access to a rooting area, a wallow or mud for cooling, shade and a warm, dry shelter; many are happiest with a second pig for company. Neutering or spaying is essential for temperament and health. The defining health risk is obesity from over-feeding treats and the wrong diet — it strains joints and can even cause 'fat blindness' as facial fat closes the eyes — so feed a proper pig ration and vegetables, not scraps. Hooves and tusks need regular trimming, skin needs sun protection and moisture to prevent dryness and mange, and a pig vet should manage dental care and arthritis as they age.
