Map turtles inhabit the rivers and large streams of the central United States, particularly the Mississippi drainage, where they favor clean, flowing, well-oxygenated water. Males stay tiny at around 10-13 cm while females reach 15-25 cm, and they typically live 15-35 years in captivity when kept in pristine conditions. Water quality is critical: map turtles are prone to shell and skin infections in dirty tanks, so provide strong filtration, frequent water changes, and a spacious aquatic setup of 300+ liters for a female. They are strong swimmers that need current and deep water alongside a warm basking area at 30-32°C with UVB. Naturally shy, they appreciate visual cover and calm surroundings. Their diet leans carnivorous, favoring snails, insects, crayfish, and pellets, with some aquatic greens offered for balance.
