Ranging across nearly all of North America from coast to coast, the painted turtle is a hardy, cold-tolerant species found in ponds, marshes, and slow streams. Adults stay relatively small at 13-25 cm depending on subspecies, making them more apartment-friendly than sliders, and they commonly reach 25-40 years or more with good care. Provide an aquatic setup of at least 200-300 liters with clean, filtered water and a warm dry basking dock at 30-32°C beneath a UVB lamp. Painted turtles are avid baskers and strong swimmers, so include both deep swimming space and easy haul-out access. Water temperature in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius suits them well. They are omnivores: feed a balanced mix of commercial turtle pellets, leafy greens, insects, and occasional fish, moderating protein in adults to keep them lean.
