Wood turtles are native to northeastern North America, dividing their time between clear streams and adjacent woodlands and meadows. A medium species at 16-25 cm, they are notably long-lived, often reaching 40-60 years, and their intelligence and personality make them rewarding, though they are protected in many areas and should only be kept from captive-bred stock. Because they are semi-terrestrial, provide a large enclosure combining a shallow water section for wading with a substantial land area of moist substrate for foraging and roaming. Include a basking spot at 29-31°C with UVB, moderate humidity, and cooler overall temperatures than tropical species tolerate. Wood turtles are omnivores with hearty appetites: offer earthworms, insects, slugs, and other invertebrates alongside berries, mushrooms, and leafy greens, mirroring their varied wild foraging.
