The Mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis and the closely related G. holbrooki) is native to the south-eastern United States and reaches about 3 to 6 cm, with females much larger than males. It was deliberately introduced across the world during the twentieth century to control mosquito larvae, and it is now established as an invasive species on every continent except Antarctica, where it competes with and preys on native fish and amphibian larvae. In Israel it is present in many freshwater habitats. If kept deliberately it is almost indestructible: 60 litres or more at 10-30C, pH 6.5 to 8.5, in nearly any water, eating flake, pellets and any live food. The honest picture matters more than the care sheet. It is an aggressive fin-nipper that harasses fancy guppies, bettas and anything slow, so it is a poor community fish. Far more importantly, it must never be released into a pond, stream, drainage channel or garden water feature, and unwanted fish should be rehomed to another keeper rather than let go. It is included here so the risk is on the record.
