The Sailfin Molly (Poecilia latipinna) comes from coastal waters of the southern United States and Mexico and reaches about 10 to 15 cm, with females larger than males. Mature males develop the enormous spotted dorsal fin the species is named for, though it can take a year to reach full size, and males kept in cramped or cold conditions often never develop it properly. It needs 120 litres or more at 23-28C in hard, alkaline water, pH 7.5 to 8.5, with good filtration and open swimming space. Its water requirements are the thing most often ignored: mollies come from hard, mineral-rich and often brackish habitats, and in soft acidic water they develop shimmying and fin clamping and rarely last. Adding aquarium salt is not required if the water is genuinely hard, but soft-water tanks are a poor match. Feed a spirulina-rich flake or pellet with vegetable content plus frozen brine shrimp, since it grazes algae constantly. It is peaceful, prolific and best kept with two or three females per male.
