Tiny (20–40 g) and fast, mice are watching pets more than handling pets — their charm is the busy society of a group. Females live happily in same-sex groups; adult males usually fight and often must live alone. Lifespan is a brief 1.5–3 years. Provide a secure enclosure (mice squeeze through astonishing gaps) with deep substrate for burrowing and nest-building, plenty of clutter, a small solid wheel and things to climb. They are naturals at architecture, weaving elaborate nests from any soft material offered. Because males scent-mark heavily, a well-ventilated tank-style home and regular spot-cleaning keep odour manageable. Feed a quality mouse or rodent mix with occasional seeds and a little fresh vegetable; keep fatty treats rare, as pet mice tend to obesity and, sadly, are very tumour-prone.
