📖 Care guide

The fancy mouse is the domesticated house mouse, kept and bred since Victorian times into hundreds of colours. Tiny (20–40 g) and fast, mice are watching pets more than handling pets — their charm is the busy society of a group. Females live happily in same-sex groups; adult males usually fight and often must live alone. Lifespan is a brief 1.5–3 years. Provide a secure enclosure (mice squeeze through astonishing gaps) with deep substrate for burrowing and nest-building, plenty of clutter, a small solid wheel and things to climb. They are naturals at architecture, weaving elaborate nests from any soft material offered. Because males scent-mark heavily, a well-ventilated tank-style home and regular spot-cleaning keep odour manageable. Feed a quality mouse or rodent mix with occasional seeds and a little fresh vegetable; keep fatty treats rare, as pet mice tend to obesity and, sadly, are very tumour-prone. Handle gently and low over a container — a startled mouse leaps. Health watch-list: respiratory infection, skin issues from mites or over-scratching, and the near-universal risk of tumours in later life.
