📖 Care guide

The mystery snail (Pomacea bridgesii, also called P. diffusa) is a peaceful apple snail from the rivers and wetlands of the Amazon basin in Bolivia, Peru and Brazil. Its rounded shell reaches about 5–6.5 cm across, and it lives 1–3 years. Selective breeding has produced gold, blue, ivory, jade and black colour forms. Mystery snails suit a tank of 40 litres or more at 20–28°C with a pH of 7.0–8.0, and, like other snails, need adequate calcium and harder water to maintain a strong shell. They breathe air using a long siphon they extend to the surface, so leave an air gap below the lid. They are peaceful and can be kept with most calm community fish, though puffers and loaches will attack them. They are gentle scavengers that eat algae, biofilm, detritus and leftover food, and generally leave healthy plants alone, appreciating supplements like algae wafers and blanched vegetables. Unlike pest snails they need a male and female to breed, and lay a distinctive pink egg clutch above the waterline, so populations are easy to control. Their main issues are shell erosion and thinning in soft or calcium-poor water, prevented by hard, mineral-rich conditions and a calcium-rich diet.
