The pea puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) is the world's smallest pufferfish, endemic to the rivers and lakes of the Western Ghats in Kerala, southern India, especially the Pamba River system. It reaches just 2.5–3.5 cm and lives 4–5 years. Despite its size it is a true puffer, with big, independently swivelling eyes and huge personality. Because they are territorial and intelligent, pea puffers are best kept in a heavily planted, species-only tank — about 40 litres for a single fish, with more space and cover for a small group of one male to two or three females. Keep the water at 22–28°C with a pH of 6.5–7.5, and provide dense plants, moss and hardscape to break lines of sight and reduce squabbling. They are strict carnivores that mostly ignore prepared foods, needing frozen or live bloodworm, blackworm and — importantly — small snails, which help wear down their constantly growing beak. Feisty and prone to nipping, they rarely make good community fish and may harass or be harassed by others. Their main risks are obesity from overfeeding, internal parasites, and ich; a varied meaty diet with snails and clean, stable water keeps them healthy.
