Native to the forests of the Himalayas and southern China, the Pekin Robin (red-billed leiothrix) is a tiny softbill weighing 20-28 grams with a lifespan of 8-14 years. As a softbill it eats a soft, insect-and-fruit-based diet rather than seeds, and it is prized as an active, richly musical aviary bird that adds movement and song to a planted enclosure. House them in a densely planted flight aviary that offers cover, foliage, and horizontal flying space, as they are restless and thrive with room to forage. Feed a quality softbill or insectivore pellet supplemented with live insects, chopped fruit, and greens, since they cannot subsist on seed. Pekin Robins do best in pairs or mixed softbill aviaries but can harass smaller birds when breeding. Maintain excellent hygiene to prevent respiratory and dietary problems, provide daily bathing water, and enjoy the male's continuous, warbling song and busy, energetic character.
