The Persian is a gentle, dignified homebody that asks for little more than a calm household, a soft place to lounge and the company of people it trusts. It is quiet and undemanding rather than playful, which makes it a superb companion for a serene home but a poor match for chaos or rough children. This is a high-commitment coat: the long, dense fur mats within days, so daily brushing is non-negotiable, and the flat face needs the eyes wiped clean of tear staining every day. Keep Persians strictly indoors and cool — their brachycephalic (short) muzzle makes them intolerant of heat and prone to laboured breathing. Health-wise, buy only from breeders who screen for polycystic kidney disease (PKD), which is common in the breed, and be alert to the breathing, dental crowding and eye problems that come with the flat face. Regular vet checks, a good dental routine and lifelong kidney monitoring keep most Persians comfortable into their teens.
