The Pictus Catfish (Pimelodus pictus) comes from the Amazon and Orinoco basins and reaches about 12 to 15 cm. Its whisker-like barbels can be longer than the body and are used to locate food by touch and taste. Unlike most aquarium catfish it is genuinely fast and active, cruising constantly rather than resting under wood, which means it needs swimming length rather than just floor space. A group of three or more needs 200 litres or more, preferably a long tank, at 22-27C, pH 6.5 to 7.8, with open lanes, wood for shade and moderate flow. Feed sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, mysis and prawn pieces. Two practical facts matter: it will eat neon tetras, chili rasboras and similarly small fish, no matter how peaceful it looks, so tankmates should be at least the size of a black skirt tetra; and its stiff serrated pectoral spines catch in nets and can injure both the fish and your hand, so always move it with a container.
