๐ Care guide
The Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) comes from the Madeira river basin in Brazil and is one of the smallest catfish kept, reaching about 2 to 3 cm. Unlike its larger relatives it spends much of the day hovering in mid-water in a loose shoal, resting on leaves and wood as often as on the substrate, which makes it look and behave more like a tiny tetra than a bottom fish. It needs numbers to feel secure: ten or more in a 45 litre tank or larger, at 22-26C, pH 6.0 to 7.5, over sand with plants and leaf litter. Feed very small foods, crushed sinking wafers, microworms, baby brine shrimp and finely ground flake, since its mouth cannot handle normal wafers. Its size is also its main constraint, because almost any medium fish will eat it, including angelfish and adult gouramis. Keep it in a nano or small community with chili rasboras, ember tetras and shrimp, and avoid strong filter intakes, which can trap fish this small without a sponge guard.
