๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The Rubber Lip Pleco (Chaetostoma species, most often C. milesi or C. formosae) comes from fast, cool Andean-fed rivers in Colombia and Venezuela and reaches about 10 to 13 cm. Unlike most plecos sold as algae eaters it stays genuinely small and keeps grazing algae as an adult rather than switching to leftovers. It does best in 100 litres or more at 21-25C, cooler than a typical tropical tank, with pH 6.5 to 7.8, strong flow and high oxygen, over smooth stones and wood. Feed algae wafers, blanched courgette and spinach plus occasional frozen food; in a spotless tank it will need supplementary vegetables rather than living on nothing. It is peaceful and quiet, and its only real requirements are oxygen and current, which reflect its river origins. In a still, warm, heavily stocked tank it slowly declines, and that is the usual cause of failure. Given moving water it is one of the best pleco choices for an ordinary community aquarium.
