๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The Sailfin Pleco (Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps) comes from the Amazon and Orinoco and reaches about 40 to 50 cm, occasionally more. Its huge spotted dorsal fin is unmistakable in an adult. It is frequently sold as a cheap clean-up crew fish at a few centimetres long, and the resulting adults are among the most commonly rehomed and abandoned aquarium fish anywhere, with released populations now established as invasive in several warm countries. If you take one on, plan for 600 litres or more at 23-28C, pH 6.5 to 8.0, with powerful filtration, since an adult produces a genuinely heavy waste load. Feed algae wafers, blanched courgette, spinach and sinking vegetable pellets with occasional protein, and provide driftwood for rasping. It is peaceful and very hardy, tolerating a wide range of conditions, and it lives fifteen years or more. The honest recommendation for a normal home tank is a bristlenose or rubber lip pleco instead: same job, a fifth of the length, and no crisis at year three.
