The Salt and Pepper Corydoras (Corydoras habrosus) comes from Venezuela and Colombia and reaches about 2 to 3.5 cm. It is often confused with the pygmy cory, but the two differ in both pattern and behaviour: habrosus has a broken row of dark blotches rather than one clean line, and it stays on the substrate, foraging the sand in the classic corydoras way. A group of eight or more suits a 45 litre tank or larger at 22-26C, pH 6.0 to 7.5, over fine sand with plants, wood and leaf litter. Feed crushed sinking wafers, microworms, baby brine shrimp and frozen cyclops. Because it genuinely works the substrate, sand rather than gravel is essential, and a bare or coarse floor leaves it unable to feed naturally. Its tankmates need to be small and peaceful, and its filter needs a sponge guard. Kept in a proper group it is confident and constantly active, whereas a pair or trio spends most of the time hidden, which is the single most common mistake with the small corys.
