๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The Rainbow Cichlid (Herotilapia multispinosa) comes from Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Honduras and reaches about 10 to 13 cm, making it one of the smallest Central American cichlids. It is gold to olive with a broken dark stripe, and pairs in breeding condition turn deep orange with black throats. It has specialised tricuspid teeth for scraping algae, unusual in its group. A pair does well in 120 litres or more at 22-28C, pH 7.0 to 8.0 in moderately hard water, with flat stones, wood and some planting. Feed a cichlid pellet with spirulina, blanched vegetables and frozen foods, since a meaningful part of its natural diet is algae. Its virtue is temperament: it is a substrate spawner with excellent parental care and only modest aggression, defending a small area rather than the whole tank, which makes it one of the few Central Americans that can share a tank with barbs, rainbowfish and larger tetras. It is also hardy across a wide temperature band and a good first cichlid for someone who does not want an African rift setup.
