The Nicaragua Cichlid (Hypsophrys nicaraguensis) comes from Nicaragua and Costa Rica and reaches about 20 to 25 cm for males, with females smaller but often more strongly coloured. Adults show gold, turquoise and violet with a dark lateral line, and mature males develop a modest forehead hump. It is unusual among cichlids in laying non-adhesive eggs which the pair deposits loose in a cave rather than glueing to a surface. A pair needs 350 litres or more at 24-28C, pH 7.0 to 8.5 in moderately hard water, with a sand bed, caves and sturdy planting. Feed a cichlid pellet with a real vegetable component plus frozen mysis and krill, since this species takes a substantial amount of plant matter in the wild. Temperament is mild for its group: it digs and defends a cave but is far less belligerent than a Jack Dempsey or Texas cichlid, and it fits into a large community of similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. It is a good choice for someone who wants a big Central American cichlid without the usual casualty list.
