๐Ÿ“– Care guide

Randall's Pistol Shrimp (Alpheus randalli) is an Indo-Pacific species of about 4 to 5 cm, banded in red and white with one enlarged snapping claw. That claw closes fast enough to create a cavitation bubble whose collapse produces a sharp crack, used to stun prey and warn intruders. Its eyesight is very poor, which is the basis of its famous partnership with watchman gobies. Provide a 75 litre or larger tank with a sand bed at least 7 cm deep plus rubble and small rocks it can use to shore up tunnels, at 24-27C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4, with no copper medications. It is largely self-feeding on detritus and leftovers but appreciates sinking pellets and chopped seafood delivered near the burrow. Pair it with a compatible watchman goby, ideally introduced at the same time. Two honest notes: the snapping is audible and constant, and the shrimp will rearrange the aquascape, so avoid balancing rock structures on the sand where undermining could topple them.
