The Starry Blenny (Salarias ramosus) comes from the western Pacific and grows to about 12 to 14 cm. Its dark body is covered in fine white spots, and it has the branched head cirri and blunt, comb-toothed jaw typical of the algae-scraping blennies. It perches rather than swims, hopping between rock ledges and using its pectoral fins as props. It needs a 150 litre or larger tank with mature live rock covered in film algae, at 24-27C, salinity 1.024-1.026, pH 8.1-8.4. This is the key husbandry point: it is a grazing herbivore, and in a clean, algae-free tank it will slowly starve unless supplemented with dried algae sheets on a clip and spirulina-based prepared foods daily. It is reef safe, peaceful and useful for controlling film algae on glass and rock. Keep only one blenny of this type per tank, as they are territorial toward similarly shaped competitors, and cover the tank since they can hop out.
