Native to the woodlands and savannas of South America, the Toco Toucan is a large softbill weighing 500-860 grams with a lifespan of 15-20 years. Charismatic, intelligent, and playful, toucans are demanding exotic pets requiring specialized care, ample space, and an experienced keeper; their huge bill is surprisingly light and used to reach fruit and regulate body heat. Toucans need a very large aviary or flight room with high perches and space to hop and leap between branches, not a standard cage. Their diet is built on low-iron softbill pellets and generous fresh fruit, strictly avoiding iron-rich foods because toucans are extremely prone to fatal iron storage disease. They produce wet, frequent droppings and need meticulous daily cleaning and fresh water for drinking and bathing. Playful and curious, toucans enjoy tossing and catching food and benefit from enrichment, gentle interaction, and the specialized veterinary care these unusual birds require.
