๐Ÿ“– Care guide

The Turquoise or Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia lacustris) is endemic to Lake Kutubu and its outflow in Papua New Guinea, and reaches about 10 to 12 cm. Adults develop a high, laterally compressed body and an intense blue-turquoise that shifts toward green along the back, with the strongest colour shown by dominant males during dawn display. Its restricted natural range makes captive-bred stock the responsible choice. A group of six or more, with several males so display behaviour occurs, needs a tank of 200 litres or more at 22-26C with a pH of 7.0 to 8.0 and medium to hard water; unlike many soft-water tropicals it prefers alkaline conditions. Give it length for swimming, planting at the sides and a secure lid, as rainbowfish jump. Feed quality flake, pellets and frequent frozen or live daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp to keep colour strong. It is hardy, peaceful and long-lived, and the honest caveat is simply that juveniles in shops look drab and give no hint of the adult colour.
