The York Chocolate began in 1983 on a goat farm in New York State, when a breeder noticed a solid dark brown kitten among ordinary farm cats and bred selectively for the colour. It is a genuinely rare breed today and is not recognised by CFA or TICA, though it is registered by smaller associations, so anyone offering one should be asked directly which registry the pedigree comes from. The farm-cat origin gave it two useful things: a robust constitution and an unusually people-focused nature. York Chocolates follow their owner from room to room, insist on being in the same chair, and often greet visitors at the door. They are playful without being frantic and generally get on well with children and other pets, which makes them one of the easier semi-longhairs to live with. The silky medium-long coat has little undercoat and mats less than a Persian would, but it still needs combing twice a week and daily attention during moults. Because the breed derives from a small foundation of random-bred cats, no inherited disease cluster has been documented, but the small gene pool means a careful breeder matters more than usual. Practical care is standard: portion control, a dental routine, annual check-ups and a good scratching post.
