The Airedale Terrier, the 'King of Terriers', is the largest of the terriers — a versatile, athletic and remarkably intelligent dog that has served as a hunter, wartime messenger and police dog. It combines terrier boldness, independence and humour with real trainability, but it is a lot of dog: energetic, strong-willed and easily bored, it needs substantial daily exercise plus genuine mental work, and consistent, patient, positive training from puppyhood, or its cleverness turns to digging, chewing and mischief. Loyal and playful with its family and good with children, it does best with an active, engaged owner. The wiry double coat sheds little but needs regular brushing and hand-stripping or clipping every few weeks, plus beard cleaning. Health-wise the Airedale is a relatively robust breed, but buy from a breeder who screens hips, and be aware of hip dysplasia, skin conditions and allergies (common in the breed), hypothyroidism and bloat (feed measured meals and rest after eating). Give an Airedale plenty of exercise, mental challenge, consistent training and grooming, and this witty, versatile 'King of Terriers' will be a spirited, devoted companion for eleven to fourteen years.
