The American Bully was developed in the United States from the 1990s, mainly from the American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier with input from other bull breeds, with the explicit aim of producing a heavier, wider companion dog with a notably softer temperament. It is recognised by the UKC as a companion breed rather than by the AKC, and comes in size classes from Pocket to XL. This catalogue places it with the bull-and-terrier types. Temperament is the breed's strongest point. A well-bred American Bully is confident, affectionate, tolerant and strongly people-oriented, typically friendly with strangers and gentle with children in its own family. It is far less dog-driven than the working bull breeds, though early socialisation is still important, and its power means training and control are a responsibility. Legal status varies: some jurisdictions restrict specific types, notably the XL, so check local law before acquiring one. The honest health discussion concerns structure. The extreme body types produced by some breeders bring real problems: shortened muzzles causing brachycephalic breathing difficulty and heat intolerance, heavily bowed front legs and wide chests loading the joints, and high rates of skin allergies and demodectic mange. Choose a breeder who breeds moderate, functional dogs that can run and breathe easily, screens hips and hearts, and does not advertise extremes. Keep the dog lean, keep it out of the heat, manage skin care, and exercise moderately, around an hour daily.
